Secret Soundings Essay Example
Secret Soundings Essay In the English Legal system, there are two classifications of judge. The superior judge and an inferior judge. Inferior judges consist of District judges, Circuit judges and Stipendiary judges. These types of judges, are all the starting point in becoming a superior judge. An inferior judge applies for their position though newspaper advertisements. The minimum period that you must have been a solicitor or barrister is ten years. You must also fit the right qualities given out by the Lord Chancellors office. Before an inferior judge sits on a case, they must have permission to do so by the Lord Chancellor. Because the Lord Chancellor still has direct control over the inferior judges, sometimes they can easily be persuaded to swing a case a particular way in cases that is governmentally orientated. This is because their position as an inferior judge is very unstable; they can easily be dismissed from the bench if they do anything wrong to upset the government. To become a superior justi ce there are certain qualifications and specific opinions that you must have. Firstly again, you must be a solicitor or barrister for a minimum of ten years; therefore, you must have the rights of audience. You must have also sat on the bench for a minimum period. Then you must conform to views of the particular political party elected at that time. This is because the Lord Chancellor is a person elected by the Prime Minister, therefore the government at the time has say in who they want to become the judges of the future. If a person has views that heavily contradict the governments standpoint then the government will not employ them as a judge. If after a certain amount of time you want to become a superior judge, you have to be selected. A particular judge is chosen over another judge because of their views. This is because a superior judge is very difficult to dismiss. In fact the only way to dismiss a superior judge is if they retire, misbehaviour, persistent failure to comply with sitting requirements without good reason, failure to comply with training requirements or sustained failure to observe standards reasonably expected from a judge. These standpoints are found out using a process called secret soundings. They occur deep in the chambers of other leading judges, who criticise or praise the upcoming barristers and solicitors, and feed this information back to the Lord Chancellors offices. There, files are compiled on particular candidates and the Lord Chancellor chooses which ones are suitable to employ. The Lord Chancellor then takes these names and gives them to the Prime Minister, who has to ask the Queen whether or not he can let them sit as Supreme judges.Although this system is very informative, there are several problems with it. One of these is the fact that no one is aloud to see the secret soundings apart from the Lord Chancellor. This means that if they were incorrect, then the person whos file it is would not know about it. In order to st op this kind of situation happening the government passed a new act, called CLSA 1990. These acts also lead to the employment of solicitors to sit on the bench. Another organisation set up when the CLSA 1990 was passed, this was the Lord Chancellors Advisory Committee. It is the job of this committee today to help maintain and develop the standards of education, training and performance of the bench. It also regulates the new applicants for the rights of audience in the higher courts. In the year 2000 ALEC was disbanded and a smaller less powerful council was set up by the Access to justice act 1999. The main overall role of the legal service act was to give equal powers to the solicitors and barristers.Other examples of changes in training of judges has been the implementation of Childrens Act 1989, and the Human Rights Act 1998. Most judges before this time were said to be racist and out of touch with society, therefore the ALEC introduced training course that it was mandatory for all judges to complete. This was seen to re-educate judges that were old white males. Is it therefore the system we need to improve or is there a need for more women to apply for the role of judges? At present, 87% of judges are male. It is very difficult to discus what the current legal systems training needs at present, and what it needs in the future. If you look at the top of the legal system, you have the judges; this is a very simplistic view of what the legal profession looked like 10 years ago. The hugely dominant old, conservative males show a very old fashioned look at the legal system, but this shows us what the pattern of solicitors and barristers looked like in the 1990s. We know this because the way lawyers are selected for the judiciary. The Lord Chancellor selects them, by secret soundings and they are chosen from high flying lawyers. Therefore, the solicitors and barristers of that time will show what range of people we will have on the judiciary, at present.Neverth eless, with the new intake of law students to become solicitors and barrister, this shows a good spread of ethnic minorities and sexes. In 5 to 10 years time the legal systems judges will be multi-ethnic and multi-sex. We just need to give the solicitors and barristers time to work up to be those judges. This would create the lawyers that this country needs in the future.

buffalo wild wings food review Essay Example
buffalo wild wings food review Essay Example buffalo wild wings food review Paper buffalo wild wings food review Paper Essay Topic: Call of the Wild Into the Wild Wild The Path of an International Student to Assimilation through American Cuisine What can an average college guy ask for in life? A good college football game in which their favorite team wins, some pretty girls, and a few drinks with some good food; all can be found in the nationally renowned Joint called Buffalo Wild Wings. Located Just off Price Forks Rd. in the college town of Blacksburg, Virginia, the franchise has established a reputation of serving authentic American food with the pleasurable experience of communal gathering for young people and the association with rofessional sports. As college students, it is hard to make ends meet, and B- dubs (as it is known in common slang) gives you what its worth, giving a foreign student like myself an honest taste of American culture. Nowhere in the world can you find a venture like Buffalo Wild Wings. The company founded in 1982 in Ohio quickly became a rapidly growing franchise, spreading to over 600 locations in North America. Walking in as a foreigner, it is overwhelming, seeing the many large screens and unrecognizable club emblems. The facility has a very mature feel to it because of he bar. The lighting is dim, highlighting the d?Ã ©cor of the place, and allowing the plasma TV screens on which various sporting events are shown to stand out. There is a smell of oak wood seeping through my nostrils as I evaluate the polished wooden tables and think of the smoked meat on the grill. The main dining plaza is large, obviously meant to hold a large number of sports fans during tournaments, however during the midday hours in the middle of the week the place has only a few groups of people enjoying their lunch. As a sports bar, Buffalo Wild Wings attempts to create n environment of competition and with a sports event going on, it is always a bit noisy as the energetic aura envelops the diner. Stunned by the grandiose nature of d?Ã ©cor, I am brought back to reality by the voice of the waitress politely asking me to follow her to a free table. Sitting down, I am handed a menu- all bright and vibrant, with a funky font that stands out; so unlike restaurants around the world where the menu is apathetically boring. At the bottom of the menu there is an infographic portraying the numerous sauces that Buffalo Wild Wings offers and their level of hotness, a true example of American promotion. As I was not familiar with the many dishes on the menu, as many foreign college students would not be, I asked for assistance. The waitress told me what the dishes offer as well as their pros and cons, helping me make my choice. Virtues of patience and honesty not usually expected from staff of most restaurants, which focus more on profit than customer satisfaction, was definitely present here and made a foreigner more comfortable in the unfamiliar environment. For my order I chose to try the traditional hot wings with several sauces hich this franchise is acclaimed for. Although being distinctly American, the Joint attempts to adopt cuisine of various cultures through their sauces which represent the authentic tastes around the world. For a foreigner, this brings a nostalgic feeling of belonging, but by being in another country, it allows for assimilation through the most unusual medium of all: food. Despite my predicament of being by myself, I saw a group of guys who were seemingly mesmerized by a soccer match of the European League on television. Surprised that anybody would be interested in such unknown tudents from Europe and South America. I instantly connected with the guys and having common interests, we chatted the whole time until the food war ready. I found this to be a defining role of Buffalo Wild Wings in the community, bringing people together through sports fanaticism. This is an aspect not seen in other food institutions allowing patrons to interact on a personal level. Finally the waitress brings out the food. Almost instantly the smell of well cooked meat fills the room as one can smell the potent mix of ingredients, spices, and sauces to create a beautifully rafted but ironically simple meal. The food is served in paper baskets, with an extra one given for bones. My meal is not large and is not arranged in a superficial manner that most restaurants attempt as part of the culinary tradition. It is almost as the disorganization of the meal in this Joint is its own aesthetic experience, challenging one to try before dealing out Judgment. As I ate my chicken wings, the meat seemed to be melting in my mouth, sending the most wildly delicious tastes into my mouth. I feel the sauce dripping down into my mouth, making the meat appetizingly Juicy. It is a taste of something new but also gave me a sense of home. By trying Buffalo Wild Wings it was a catharsis for my taste buds. Overall my venture to Buffalo Wild Wings proved to be unexpectedly satisfying, giving me a true taste of the local cuisine and giving me a sense of the community. It is a restaurant I would definitely come back to and advise every international student to try, to fit in and to have a great time. After this visit, the franchise which distinguishes itself from all others in so many ways, truly stood out in my eyes as a place of ardent cuisine.

Why we should send a Manned Mission to Mars Essay
Why we should send a Manned Mission to Mars - Essay Example The researcher states that President Barack Obama has told NASA scientists to broaden their horizons and look to send humans to Mars. He thinks that a likely time scale for this is the mid-2030s. The President is looking to decrease missions to Mars in the hope of reaching a planet that could prove vital for our future. The focus is now on exploring new planets and not revisiting the same places that we as humans have already conquered. I concur with this assessment because it has now been over 40 years since the first moon landing was achieved but nothing has really happened since. The 1960s was a great decade for space travel but this has never really been built upon. Manned missions to Mars can recreate the achievements of that decade and even surpass them. However, if manned missions are to be achieved, then there will be many environmental, political, and ethical challenges to face first. If astronauts were able to make it to Mars, then they would need supplies from Earth every once and awhile in order to sustain themselves. The reason why I think that it makes sense that humans next try to conquer Mars is that Mars have plenty of water to maintain life. Even though Mars would have a sufficient quantity of water, it would still be difficult to live there. The temperatures can fall below freezing in some places, and the atmosphere is typically made up of carbon dioxide, which means that extra oxygen would need to be supplied.

Public Goods Essay Example for Free
Public Goods Essay We are very much familiar with this line ââ¬Å"I believe the children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the wayâ⬠. Children are considered the hope of every nation for they will soon become our leaders. We all want our children to get everything they deserve to get, receive fair treatment and have high quality education because this will help them contribute to the welfare of the society, they are a good investment. But not all parents have the capacity to provide even the most basic needs of their children. Sometimes we wish children were just valued as a public good. A public good is a term used by economists to refer to a product (i. e. , a good or service) of which anyone can consume as much as desired without reducing the amount available for others. ( Public Goods: A Brief Introduction). Myra Stober suggested in her article that children must be raised and guided collectively so the nation as a whole will benefit from them not just their parents. If that happens, equality among children can be accomplished and the nation will prosper a lot from them. However, if this will be implemented it can lead to market failure where uncoordinated markets driven by parties working in their own self interest are unable to provide these goods in desired quantities. (Wikipedia) Considering children as a public good is only an alternative and should not be considered the best solution because is not the best remedy to proper child care. Meeting their needs cannot be done in a snap because it takes a lot of consideration to do so. Using an Advertising Agency for British Airways :: Business Management Studies
Advertisers (BA) such as the client of an agency and agencies for example media-buying as well as advertising service provider review their methods of remuneration for different reasons: à · Advertisers such as BA want to be sure they are getting value for their money ââ¬â this means in other words that BA wants to be sure that the service that they want to promotes gets best possible services without the agency charging them over expensive bills. à · Agencies and media buying services want to be profitable so they remain viable ââ¬â for an agency their main source of income is from providing advertisement services that business can purchase. By looking at the clients point of view and the agencies there is a clear underline that in some cases these two above issues can lead to disagreements, but this can be avoided through negotiating before any work is carried out by the agencies like for example negotiating payments, services etc. Advantages One of the main advantages of an agency would be that some agency would execute and develop an entire promotional campaign from scratch to completion, the agency does this through relating the clients (BA) needs with the promotion campaign of the service of BA this enables the client to be assured that its needs are met. An agency also takes a good part of developing and planning media so that the clients (BA) promotional campaign of their services gets maximum communication effectiveness, this means in other words that an agency would do its best to promote the clients service advertisement to get awareness of BAââ¬â¢s target audiences. à · Once the media plan is in place, the advertiser such as in this case BA knows what they will be paying their agency and the agency knows what it will be receiving. à · Putting pressure on an agency to keep its costs reasonably is the best method of making sure that the agency gets carried away with the clients money to advertise. à · An agency offers to its clients creativity this means new ways of looking at advertising this could help because a company like BA after so many years of advertising could loose its advertising appeal, this is where advertising agencies are a key contributor because they offer never ending creativity. à · An agency contributes to a company new and innovative ideas to help them to get their promotion campaign an effective edge to attract customers. à · The advantages of using and agency would be the certainty of getting information such as market research for BAââ¬â¢s services to help them to benefit from, this means in other words after the contribution of the

Great Gatsby Corruption
Possibly one of F. Scott Fitzgerald's most astonishing work, The Great Gatsby is not just a magnificent story, but an insightful lesson of society's flaws during the 1920's. Fitzgerald's novel creates an atmosphere of superficiality, dissatisfaction and dishonesty by the depictive illustration of each character's defect. With economical growth, the immoral society of the twenties ultimately brought corruption to the American Dream of achieving prosperity. At the end of the first chapter, the green light at the end of Daisy's dock is introduced, the symbol for hope and a promising future for the Great Gatsby. In the second chapter however, the reader is presented with the, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ valley of ashesâ⬠¦ where ashes take the form of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and finallyâ⬠¦ of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery airâ⬠. The valley of ashes can be interpreted as the superficial and dirt-filled materialistic world that the characters live in. The author's great use of imagery helps accentuate the setting and the crumbling foundation of society. In Fitzgerald's novel, Gatsby is labeled as ââ¬Å"new moneyâ⬠. Having come from no wealthy background, and building his fortunes early in life, Gatsby nearly fulfills all the aspects of the American Dream with hard work, courage and determination but comes short by not achieving satisfaction from prosperity. Money was the critical reagent to Gatsby's corruption that unfolds when he describes Daisy. ââ¬Å"Her voice is full of moneyâ⬠. Often identified as a symbol of wealth, Daisy was Gatsby's main goal. Gatsby had an enormous need to impress Daisy with his riches; his tainted mind could only offer what he had acquired all these years, money.
